Hosdo Cake is being recalled due to claims that it contains undeclared milk and unidentified greenish-yellow fluorescent dye. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with the South Korean product, customers who purchased it are advised not to eat it, but to return it to the place of purchase.
Hosdo Cake Recall: Summary
The recalled cakes were sold in New York City, and come in blue and white, seven-ounce packages. The UPC code is 6922486392216.
Food Inspectors and food laboratory personnel at the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets discovered the presence of milk in Hosdo Cake packages during routine inspections—even though milk wasn’t listed as an ingredient on the label.
According to the FDA, milk is one of the top eight most common allergenic foods (along with certain types of fish, shellfish, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soybeans, and wheat). Since millions of Americans have allergic reactions each year, labels must clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are derived from one of these eight major food allergens.
Food labels are essentially supposed to help people with allergies identify ingredients that they could easily avoid to help prevent the onset of allergies. People who are allergic to milk, for example, could end up with constricted airways, anaphylactic shock, swelling of the throat, and other life-threatening allergic reactions.
Unfortunately, there’s no remedy or “cure” for food allergies. So reading labels, recognizing what you are allergic to and avoiding such ingredients is important.
