Oscar-winner Charlize Theron says that “I am very fat right now” thanks to having gained 35 pounds for her upcoming comedy about motherhood, Tully. The Mad Max: Fury Road star had to put on weight for the role because she portrays a nanny and mom of three who has recently given birth. The 41-year-old actress is normally a fitness fanatic, always active and working hard to maintain her athletic and fit body.
At an event last week, the amfAR Inspiration Gala in Los Angeles, the star wore a loose-fitting black gown with a black blazer—a noticeable departure from her typical body-hugging gowns that show off her shapely and toned curves. “Yes, I am very fat right now,” was the response Theron gave after Chelsea Handler made a joke about the actress’s weight gain. Theron was at the HIV/AIDS research foundation’s gala to receive this year’s Inspiration Award for the work she has done in the fight against the disease through her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP).
This isn’t the first time the actress has packed on weight for a role. Her most notable role, and the one that earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, was for her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos in Monster. On the opposite side of the weight scale, Theron had to buff up for her role in Mad Max: Fury Road, so she is no stranger to manipulating her body for roles.
Other actors famous for this type of method acting who have undergone a change in weight for a role include Matthew McConaughey, who also won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Dallas Buyer’s Club and Jared Leto, for the same movie. Both actors lost massive amounts of weight for their roles in that movie.
Charlize Theron’s Diet and Workout
Weight gain aside, the mom of two will lose the weight within a few months and will get her figure back, much like she did after the shooting of Monster was over. Within a few months she was at the premiere of that movie looking slim again, and Theron will more than like likely sport a svelte figure at the premiere of Tully as well.
Eating clean is how the actress likes to keep things in the kitchen and when eating out. She chooses fresh fruit, vegetables, and lean proteins over junk food and processed foods. Steak and eggs for breakfast is one of her favorite meals in the morning. Since it is a protein-packed combination, it keeps her full for hours. Theron simply loves red meat, and the high-fat breakfasts she eats regularly are balanced out by the salads and fish she often has for lunch.
Theron is a trained ballet dancer and has always been active throughout her life, as her typically toned body shows. Fedele De Santis, owner of The Gym on Nemo, has worked with the South African actress for years. He says that Theron is serious about her workouts. The workout he does with her is based on the principles of ballet, and works every muscle group. On her own, Theron likes to do yoga and Pilates as regularly as possible.
