Demi Lovato has been candidly open about her previous struggles with drug abuse, but now the 5 ft. 3½ inch beauty is treating her body like a temple by following a strict diet and fitness workout routine.

The 23-year-old singer debuted her new single “Body Say” last Wednesday at a special advance premiere in Atlanta before it was officially released on Friday to rave reviews.

In addition to working her vocal cords, the songstress recently opened up to Self magazine that she exercises five to six days each week—although she admits that working out is all about peace of mind, not about losing weight. Still, the singer is regularly spotted at the gym, jogging and riding her bike.

When it comes to workouts, on Mondays Lovato does cardio for half an hour while on Tuesdays she focuses on strength training. On Wednesdays, the singer indulges in yoga, salutations, and stretches, before repeating the cycle for the remainder of the week.

Demi Lovato’s Diet Secrets

Lovato’s diet secrets aren’t so many secrets—her diet plan is more about following a healthy lifestyle and listening to the frank advice from her nutritionist:

  • Carbs post-workout: For one, Lovato has said to only eat carbohydrates after a workout as the body is more receptive to carbs. She allegedly tries to avoid taking carbs at night.
  • Limits restaurant food: Lovato’s trainer/nutritionist has also been cooking healthy meals for the singer—this is a prime way to avoid the hidden salt and sugar found in many restaurant meals. Demi’s meals are filled with fruits, veggies, sushi, and salads (she’s apparently a huge fan of mango shrimp salad). To make sure she gets enough veggies, her nutritionist shops at health food stores (even when on tour) and prepares fresh food and juices for the singer that include healthy ingredients, such as spinach, ginger, and kale. In order to not feel deprived, she’ll eat tacos made with spinach and ground turkey, topped with vegan cheese, hot sauce, and lettuce—a simple, relatively healthy meal that’s full of flavor!
  • Structured meals: Lovato eats frequent, small meals throughout the day—she previously stated that a structured meal plan helps her with portion control.
  • No alcohol: In March, Lovato celebrated her fourth year of sobriety. Although drinking alcohol can make you joyous (for a moment), there’s still the possibility of weight gain. A glass of wine (five ounces) has approximately 150 calories, while light beer (12 ounces) or a shot of vodka (1.5 ounces) contains about 100 calories—and most people consume more than one glass of alcohol. Demi is also a huge fan of plain water.

Since Demi Lovato started her workout and diet plan, she’s lost an estimated 30 pounds! Even if it’s not solely about weight loss, following Lovato’s lead can lead to a healthier lifestyle, body, and mind.
