A brand new trailer for La La Land has added to the anticipation for its December release. The adventurous musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling is sure to get people talking—not just about seeing their favorite stars singing and dancing across the silver screen, but about how hot they are—and inspired to stick to their 2017 New Year’s Resolutions.

Neither star is a stranger when it comes to stripping down and showing off the goods, and that’s because both actors take care of their bodies. Last time Gosling took his shirt off people were like, “Whoa, what’s his abs workout?” or “That guy must have been weight training,” while the same people were probably saying, “She must eat a healthy diet,” about Emma Stone. And you know what? They were right.

Getting Lean for the Silver Screen

Each person—celebrity or not—does something different to get in shape. Some people opt for changing how they eat, some people hit the gym, and some focus on cardio like running, swimming or cycling. Others like to stick to things like Pilates, boxing or Soulcycle. At the end of the day, it’s really about what works for them, motivates them, and keeps them feeling good.

Any type of exercise is good exercise, and the more you move, the better your health will be. Losing weight or building a more defined physique, however, requires an integrated approach. Although a healthy diet, weight training, or just doing cardio will each offer its own benefits, when used together, they can increase health, improve body composition, and get you the physical attributes you might be looking for. Ryan Gosling, for example, didn’t just get ripped by doing some sit-ups and push-ups; he likely banged out some intense sessions in the weight room to build his muscles, added some cardio to shed the fat, and manipulated his diet to first build muscle, then lean out. When it comes to overall fitness and physique, there are a number of factors to focus on.

You’re Seeing the Sum of the Parts

If you want to build the total package, the best way to do it is to incorporate a healthy diet, resistance exercise, and cardio into the mix. Performing some type of resistance work like weight training, Pilates, circuit training, etc. helps build muscle. Eating a healthy diet very low in processed foods, refined sugars, soda, and alcohol helps you build muscle and lose fat, while cardio helps improve your heart and lose fat. When you’re trying to build muscle, you’ll want to keep calories a bit higher. Add 250 per week to fuel workouts and recovery during your muscle-building period (which should last 8 weeks to a year, depending on what your goals are).  Then scale back your calories and eat less carbs as you try to lose fat and show off your muscle (8-12 weeks minimum). Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone didn’t build their bodies in a day, and neither can you. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
