Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is known for the incredibly lean, slim, and muscular body that he’s pretty much maintained since hitting the big screen back in the early nineties.

But the actor’s moved away from his typical physique for his latest movie, Gold, where he had to rock a dad bod, as is the colloquial way of saying he let himself go. McConaughey takes his roles seriously, and the only way to fully portray the character in this movie was to have the same body as the man the story is based on.

So McConaughey’s weight gain was very much intentional, though it is surprising to see. He was in Toronto with his wife attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this week for the movie premiere of his new film, Sing, where he lends his voice to one of the animated characters.

Matthew McConaughey’s Workout Plan, Daily Diet

Just mention the movie Magic Mike and many people conjure up the image of some incredibly chiseled men, Matthew McConaughey included. The star has been considered a Hollywood hunk for over a decade now and was named People’s sexiest man in 2005.

McConaughey has always been into fitness, which is made obvious by his body: a body that has always been in shape and toned. He runs regularly and follows a consistent cardio routine; he consistently runs four- to five-mile beach runs, with stops along the way for sets of 30 push-ups at a time, and he’s usually completed about 200 by the end of his run.

For his beefed up role in Magic Mike—where the actor played a stripper—McConaughey worked with well-known celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson, who made McConaughey do two circuit-training sessions each day, six days a week. The workout was meant to condition his already fit body, while maintaining his lean mass.

When there’s no role to prepare for, McConaughey trains with Peter Park at his Malibu home, where they do pullups on the kids’ swing set, sprints in his backyard, push-ups, one-legged squats, and finally some kettlebell work to build muscle. A several mile bike ride follows this routine.

As McConaughey gets older, he realizes that being fit and in shape is 90% diet, saying that it doesn’t matter how much you run, it’s how little—or how much—you eat.

The actor eats most of his meals in the early hours of the day, and eats lighter as the day progresses. He has whey protein shakes every few hours (especially before and after a workout). The foods he tends to eat include peas, cabbage, plums, beans, pepper, and cucumbers.
