Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum have themselves a couple of flat tummies. In fact, they may even win this year’s flat tummy couples’ contest—if there was such a thing. They’ve got 12-defined abs between the two of them, and that’s pretty darn good by anyone’s count.

What makes it even more impressive is that Dewan’s curvy figure is intact following the birth of the couple’s first child, Everly. She went through some pretty rapid weight loss following Everly’s arrival, dropping 33 pounds in seven weeks, partly due to her active lifestyle and vegan diet.

Staying Active Through Pregnancy

Under normal circumstances, losing 33 pounds in seven weeks is not a good thing. It’s too fast, unhealthy, and will put you at risk for gaining most of the weight back and then some. Ideally, losing 1-2 pounds a week is the best pace to diet, creating the opportunity for easy and sustainable weight loss—but Dewan gave birth, so the numbers are inflated.

Part of what made it so easy for her to lose weight following the birth of her baby is that she maintained a healthy diet and active lifestyle throughout the pregnancy. She told various media outlets she adhered to her vegan diet, while finding a way to be active every single day. She partook in activities like hiking, walking or working out, so she was still fit. After her body recovered from giving birth, she was able to get back in the gym, increase her intensity, and get back into her dancing workouts led by celebrity trainer Jennifer Johnson. Dancing gets the calorie burning on by offering a full-body, cardiovascular workout. If high-intensity dancing isn’t your thing, you can try something similar, like cardio-based boxing-style workouts.

Eating for A Flat Tummy

Exercise isn’t the only thing that helps Dewan keep a flat tummy; she also eats for it. She eats a vegan diet that helps her minimize fat accumulation, while offering plenty of fiber to help with nutrient absorption and fight inflammation. A fiber-rich diet has a number of benefits, including cardiovascular health and promoting a diverse gut flora, and is recommended for everybody looking to improve health or lose weight. Fiber can help lower blood pressure, limit inflammation, enhance “healthy” gut bacteria and lower cholesterol. A high-fiber diet can also lower your appetite because it can make you feel fuller for longer. It’s also a great way to lower the risk of diabetes because it slows absorption of naturally occurring sugars when consumed as a whole. The fiber in apple will slow glucose absorption, but taking a fiber supplement with a can of soda will not.

Some high-fiber foods include:

  • Split peas
  • Lentils
  • Black beans (most beans)
  • Raspberries
  • Pears
  • Apples
  • Bran flakes
  • Popcorn
  • Oatmeal
