Julianne Hough, Dancing with the Stars Judge, Follows Yoga, Hiking and Cardio Workouts to Stay Fit

Grease Live! star and Dancing With the Stars (DWTS) judge Julianne Hough is on the September issue of Shape magazine, where she talks about her diet and workouts that focus on strength and health instead of just being skinny. The dancer and actress is currently in a feud with DWTS contestant Amber Rose over body shaming. Rose criticized Hough’s remarks on her salsa routine last week. “[I]t was a point in the dance where I had to lift my leg up and Maks dipped me and [Julianne] said, ‘Oh, I’m uncomfortable,’ and instantly I felt, I did feel body shamed, ” she said on her Loveline with Amber Rose podcast.

Hough, 28, says she loves the shape of her body because she feels strong and fit, and that, in turn, makes her feel confident. Looking back on pictures of herself when she was 19, she admits that her body was amazing but says she was killing herself to get it by working out two and a half hours a day and eating the bare minimum. It wasn’t healthy, she knows, and she thinks she looked like a kid. Age has given her wisdom to embrace the fact that she is a woman with curves, and Hough has changed her mindset for the better.

Now she exercises three to six times a week, with five days of hard-core training. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays she does Tracy Anderson or Body by Simone, or she works out with her trainer, Astrid Swan. Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for Core Power yoga, which she absolutely loves. If she’s doing something special, then she will also take a SoulCycle spinning class.


On weekends, Hough goes hiking for hours with her friends or takes another yoga class – depending on how she feels. Sundays, she takes the day off to relax and get mentally and spiritually prepared for the week ahead. It’s her reboot day, but she will happily go for a walk with her dogs.

One of her favorite activities is going to classes with her girlfriends. Actresses Nina Dobrev and Sarah Hyland are two of her closest friends. The trio even turned a girls trip to Mexico into a healthy trip by taking classes led by Hough. There were no tequila shots or partying hard for those girls on that trip – though they did enjoy a cocktail or two.

As for diet, she says that she and her fiancé, NHL pro Brooks Laich, generally eat protein and vegetables, but if he had it his way, they would have steamed chicken and broccoli every day. Pizza is Hough’s favorite cheat meal, and she eats it a lot, she says. She wants everyone to know that she’s not Miss Perfect. And we love her for knowing that you can work out regularly, eat right, and have a fit body, while still indulging in some tasty food that might be considered “off limits.”

Monday: Trampoline Cardio at Body By Simone or a Tracy Anderson workout.


Tuesday: Hot Yoga at CorePower Yoga. Yoga grounds her. Hot yoga is a favorite.

Wednesday: Workouts with Tracy Anderson.

Thursday: SoulCycle spinning classes are on deck this day, as is CorePower yoga.

Friday: Workouts with one of her trainers.

Saturday: A CrossFit-inspired beach workout with Laich. Working out on the sand adds a challenge to the muscles in the body.

Sunday: Rest day and a walk with her dog.
