Many series and actors get nominated for a Golden Globe each year, but just one is fortunate enough to win. Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies were nominated for Best TV Drama Actress and Best TV Supporting Actor last year, respectively.
The stars looked incredible, with Caitriona in a gorgeous black lace gown that revealed her svelte figure. The handsome hunk, Heughan wore a black suit and looked phenomenal.
The stars did not become fit overnight; there are long days of rigorous workouts and a healthy diet involved.
Sam Heughan’s Diet and Workout Routine
For his warrior look, Heughan hits the gym regularly. His workouts involve running and CrossFit. The star admitted to doing a lot of running, including charity and marathon running. He completes deadlifts and Olympic lifting to bulk up in size, along with plenty of conditioning work.
He worked out two-to-three times a day to prepare for the Golden Globe awards. He also ate lots of clean healthy food. He mainly consumes sweet potatoes, chicken, and peanut butter to fuel his muscles.
For Outlander, it was essential to get the actor’s body to look like it came from 1721—the year that the show is set. For the show, his body needs to look like it was created in the wild, through running in the forest and hunting animals.
Heughan explain to Men’s Fitness, “During shooting, my weight did vary a little, because it is quite difficult when you are on location, and good nutrition can be hard to find. I started taking supplements, and I started eating protein bars as they were easy to carry around. In the last few months I went Paleo, as my character Jamie gets captured and he is in prison for a short while. I wanted to lean out a bit more, and I did find that that did help, though it was quite difficult at first to get into that regime.”
Caitriona Balfe’s Diet and Workout
Balfe has a narrow and thin frame. She prefers working out only when she is preparing for a role. The rest of the time, she only does light exercises at home. She worked out a lot for Outlander, which helped her look fit at the awards too. She did a lot of boot camp for to learn to ride horses, which consisted of riding and jumping off of horses.
She mentioned in an interview with Village magazine, “My aunts and uncles will be like, ‘oh do you eat?’ but I’ve always been lucky that I can. I eat more than Dave. I go through very, very sporadic, once-in-a-blue-moon fits of going running and stuff, but I’m so lazy. When shows are coming up I just do some exercises at home and maybe not have so much chocolate cake the week before. A few more salads, that kind of thing.”
She consumes a protein rich diet and avoids processed and junk foods. She eats lots of fresh fruits, veggies, and nuts. Sometimes she does indulge in her favorites, but in moderation.
