Heisman Trophy winner and former QB Tim Tebow was signed to a minor league baseball contract with the New York Mets a couple of weeks ago.
The 29-year-old held a workout for MLB scouts and evaluators from 28 major league organizations last month, and it was clearly a success—he was given a $100,000 signing bonus and will play in the Instructional League. There is also a possibility that the former NFL player will be sent to the Arizona Fall League.
Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said they were intrigued with the potential that Tebow has. Alderson believes that Tebow has shown himself to be a tremendous athlete and thinks that he has a great competitive spirit.
Having not played baseball since high school, Tebow’s raw power and bat speed impressed some of the scouts during the August workout that he set up for them to attend, where he played the outfielder position.
How Did Tim Tebow Prepare?
Tebow needed to fuel up big time for his August baseball workout. In order to impress the scouts, he had to be in great shape.
He allegedly follows a ketogenic diet, which means that he eats a lot of healthy fats, a moderate amount of protein, very few carbs, and almost no sugar.
He reportedly starts the day with a half-decaf half-regular cup of coffee because he doesn’t want too much caffeine. But that’s not the only thing that makes his cup of java unique: he reportedly also adds heavy whipping cream and butter to it.
For breakfast, he eats eggs and will pair them with ham, bacon, and spinach, or scramble in some avocado. The rest of his meals are made from a combination of lean chicken, steak, and salmon, as well as vegetables including asparagus, spinach, avocado, and guacamole.
What Did They Think?
Scouts who were on hand had mixed opinions on Tebow’s performance, who is about 10 years older than a typical baseball prospect. One scout said it was a waste of time going to the workout, that it was more like watching an actor trying to portray a baseball player.
But a National League scout had a different take on what he saw; he thought that it was better than expected and believed Tebow’s power was impressive.
General Manager Alderson is realistic about how far this could go given Tim Tebow’s age, but they are trying to be positive. At this point, no one really knows where his baseball career will go, but it will be interesting to watch and see.
